Best ways to get around Bournemouth

07 December 2009

If you open any paper and read the news at the moment, then chances are you will read something about climate change. It is a widely known fact that cars do not help the environment and that we all need to start using alternatives when travelling.

We've compiled the best alternative means of transports that Bournemouth has to offer so that when you visit, you don't need to bring the car or miss out on any of the great places to visit in and around the Bournemouth area.

Bournemouth Gardens on footOn Foot:

Bournemouth is a great town to be explored on foot. With so many gorgeous open areas on offer, the many award winning gardens provide a great opportunity for integrating a walk on your way to the beach or the town centre shops.

And for those who would like to find out more about Bournemouth, its history and charm, one of several themed guided walks might just be the right thing. A walk is no longer than one and a half miles and takes around two hours.

On Bike:

Although it is prohibited to cycle on the promenade between Bournemouth and Poole during July and August, Bournemouth provides many great bike routes.

-  The Bourne Valley Greenway is 6.5 km long and runs from Poole to Bournemouth Gardens.

 -  GPS Cycle Route Bournemouth to Ashurst New Forest: The bike journey is 50 km long, starts in Bournemouth, runs through Christchurch and ends at the New Forest.

-  Route 2 of the National Cycle Network runs through Christchurch, parallel to the Bournemouth Seafront and through Poole.

Information about all other cycle routes around Poole, Bournemouth and Christchurch is available in the Bournemouth Cycle Map online or it can be picked up from the Bournemouth Library or the Visitor Information Bureau in Westover Road.

By Taxi:

Currently, there are 250 licence Taxis in service around Bournemouth town. In our experience, the best places to get one is from the railway station or at the Lansdowne, just a short walk from the Bournemouth beach. Other taxi ranks are located throughout the town centre. The Day Rate for a taxi in Bournemouth is on average £3.59 for the first mile and £1.90 per mile thereafter while at night the charges increase to an average £4.79 for the first mile and £2.54 per mile thereafter.

Bournemouth Land TrainsBy Land Trains:

One of the most relaxing ways to enjoy the stunning view from the Bournemouth seafront is by going one of the colourful land trains. They operate between Bournemouth Pier and Boscombe Pier and also travel from Bournemouth Pier to Alum Chine, stopping at the West Cliff Lift, Durley Chine and Middle Chine. Due to the winter weather and seaside location, the land trains in Bournemouth only operate in the Spring and Summer months, so if you miss them over the Winter, make sure you visit again!

By Bus:

Bournemouth has an excellent bus network system, with two bus operator, the Wilts & Dorset Buses and the Transdev Yellow Buses, covering the Poole-Bournemouth-Christchurch area. Both companies offer day tickets, with which passengers can travel unlimited for the whole day. This provides a great way to get around Bournemouth, since you can enjoy the view, especially in the summer when many open top buses circulate. Buses in Bournemouth are also very handy, because many services stop in the town centre and close to the Pier Approach.

If you've got anything else you'd like to add to this list, please let us know. Happy travelling!
